A COB or SMD label is a starting point for an LED strip shortlist. For a distributor range, cabinet detail or architectural lighting project, the useful question is how the selected strip performs in the intended assembly. A sample comparison can help resolve appearance, fit and control requirements before the order specification is agreed.
Define the decision the sample must answer
Describe where people will see the light: directly, through a cover or as a reflection from another surface. Note the viewing position, available recess and surrounding finish. COB products are often considered for a continuous-looking light line, while an SMD strip uses individual surface-mounted LED packages. Neither label alone establishes the installed appearance. Write down what an acceptable result should look like in the project.
Choose comparable colour and control configurations
Compare candidates intended for the same task. For white light, specify the required colour temperature and colour-rendering target. For colour-changing work, distinguish tunable white, RGB, RGBW and addressable effects, and confirm the exact model and controller interface. JINYILED lists different colour and control configurations within its strip catalogues; a family illustration does not mean every model offers every option. Do not assume that choosing COB or SMD determines the control method.
Inspect complete assemblies under consistent conditions
Where both candidates fit, use the same proposed channel, cover, sample length, mounting position and viewing distance. Keep ambient lighting consistent and record any differences in power or control settings. If one strip needs a different assembly, document that change and compare the two complete solutions. Observe the light line and reflections on the intended surface. Photographs are useful records, but exposure and white balance can change their appearance. Have electrical setup and testing carried out by qualified personnel following each model’s instructions.
Check the cut length and connection space
Confirm PCB width, total strip dimensions, permitted cutting interval and the space needed for pads, connectors, leads and end fittings. A strip that fits the channel may still leave insufficient room for its connection. Equal board width does not establish connector compatibility: contact count, pad layout, voltage and current rating also matter. JINYILED’s single-colour connector references should not be assumed suitable for RGB or addressable strips. Any empty silicone tube or cover is supplied without an LED strip.
Request evidence for the light-quality targets
Compare model data for light output, power consumption and colour rendering where these matter to the brief. Wattage alone does not establish brightness, and a photograph cannot verify a colour-rendering value. Ask what the figures describe: the bare strip or a complete assembly, and under which test conditions. If dimming is required, assess the proposed strip, supply and controller together at the intended settings. Keep unverified values marked as awaiting confirmation rather than filling the gap with a series-wide claim.
Keep sample approval tied to the order specification
Record the exact strip code, configuration, assembly components, control settings and agreed observations. Retain a labelled reference sample if practical. A later change to the strip, cover, connector or control equipment should trigger a review of the affected result. Visual approval does not verify an IP rating, certification or lifetime claim; those need separate evidence for the exact product. Use the sample record to explain which configuration the quotation and order should match.
Send a focused sample-comparison brief
- Application, viewing position and the visual result to be approved
- Proposed COB and SMD model codes or links, with required colour and control configuration
- Channel or silicone cross-section drawing, cover and available connection space
- Required finished length, cutting constraints and intended run layout
- Light-output, colour-rendering and dimming targets that need supporting data
- Installation environment and any model-specific protection or market requirements
- Sample labels, evaluation conditions, acceptance notes and requested order quantity
Start with JINYILED’s separate SMD and COB catalogues, then send the candidate models and project drawing with this brief. The next step is to confirm which sample configurations can be supplied and which details still need checking. A recorded comparison gives the buyer and supplier a clearer basis for selection than the construction label alone.
